Wolverine senior Dane Hoffman advanced to sections when he qualified in two events. He won the shotput with a toss of 42 feet, two inches and then blew past the state qualifiying mark in the discus by nearly 20 feet.

Kayla Krause carded an 89, but missed out on a top 10 finish by six strokes, as Wadena-Deer Creek finished 14th in the 17-team Cardinal Invite at The Vintage in Staples on Saturday.

Maggie Leland of Alexandria fired a 73 for medalist honors in leading the Cardinals to the team title. She was joined by teammate Amanda Bigger, who finished fifth individually with 80.

The host Staples-Motley squad finished 13th, five strokes ahead of the Lady Wolverines, and was paced by Kelly Hagenson, who finished seventh with 81.

Gunnar Johnson struck out 15 Wadena-Deer Creek batters in the opening game as the Staples-Motley Cardinals swept the Mid-State Conference doubleheader Friday by scores of 12-4, and 8-0.

The Cardinals cruised to a 9-0 lead before the Wolverines answered in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Colter Pettit. The Wolverines capped the scoring in the seventh as Jake Rude hit a two-out, bases-loaded double to plate three runs.

Grand Rapids placed three in the top five individually as the Thunderhawks dominated the United North Central Invitational at Blueberry Pines by 30 strokes over runner-up Detroit Lakes on Thursday.

Thunderhawk Mikky Kromy fired a 38 on the front nine, and then took one stroke off her score in the back nine to card a 75 for medalist honors. Grand Rapids’ Steph Mackey placed second individually with 81 (41-40) and Katie Sheetz fourth with 85 (42-43).

Samantha Holweger hit a pair of triples as Wadena-Deer Creek swept the Mid-State Conference doubleheader Friday from Staples-Motley by scores of 6-1 and 4-3.

Megan Popp went 3-for-3 with a run and RBI to lead the Lady Wolverines at the plate in the first game. Steph Hahn surrendered four hits and struck out five in the complete game win.

Brad Johnson carded a 96, followed by Lane Hillukka’s 98 as the United North Central Warriors boys golf team finished eighth with 498 points at the Mid-Minn Conference meet at the Whitefish Golf Club on Thursday.

Zach Israelson of Staples-Motley shot 75 for medalist honors in leading the Cardinals to a 28-stroke victory with 401 points.

Wadena-Deer Creek tallied 429 points for a distant runner-up finish as Michael Wing shot 76 for the Wolverines.

Bailey Mueller shot a 86 to lead Park Rapids to sixth.

Kayla Krause fired an 88 to pace the Wadena-Deer Creek girls golf team to a seventh place showing at the Wadena-Deer Creek Invitational Thursday.

Krause missed the individual medalist honors by two strokes as Matty Tschider of Detroit Lakes captured first place with 82 and Trista Hutchinson was fifth with 86 in leading the Lakers to the team title.

Perham’s Kaylan Huber shot 86 for the runner-up Yellowjackets and Kelly Hagenson fired an 86 to lead Staples-Motley to eighth place.
