In the sixth year of seeding the qualified teams, Hermantown was chosen No. 1 in Class A and Duluth East was chosen No. 1 in Class AA for the 2012 State Boys’ Hockey Tournament.

The Hawks of Hermantown qualified for the ninth time and are seeking their second state title. The Greyhounds of Duluth East are making their 19th trip to the tournament and are seeking their fourth state title.

Staples, Minn.—Austin Cannon and Carlos Castro tallied 11 points apiece for Sebeka during Friday’s 67-47 non-conference loss to Staples-Motley.

The loss extended the Trojans losing streak to four games while the Cardinals halted a three-game slide.

Richfield, Hopkins earn top seeds; Eight teams making first appearances
 

All four teams return to defend their 2011 titles: Maranatha Christian Academy of Brooklyn Park in Class A, Braham in Class AA, DeLaSalle of Minneapolis in Class AAA, and Hopkins in Class AAAA.

All three of the 2011 team champions return to defend their respective titles: the Jackson County Central Huskies in Class A; the Simley Spartans in Class AA; and the Apple Valley Eagles in Class AAA. Jackson County Central, which tied Frazee for top honors in 2011, is looking for its third consecutive title. Simley of Inver Grove Heights is looking for its fifth consecutive title and Apple Valley is seeking its seventh consecutive title.

Willmar, Minn.—Hunter Schneider netted four goals and two assists as seventh-seeded Willmar opened the Section 6A playoffs with the 10-1 rout of No. 10 Wadena-Deer Creek on Saturday.

Zech Streed ignited the Cardinals’ seven-goal scoring frenzy in the opening period with a goal nine seconds into the game and Schnieder iced his hat trick at the 14:54 mark of the frame.

Benson, Minn.—Mitchell Swanson netted a hat trick for Wadena-Deer Creek during Tuesday’s 9-5 regular season finale loss to Morris-Benson.

The Storm erupted for five goals in the first period with Brody Gimberlin, Luke Schwarz and Mac Beyer netting two goals apiece during the victory. In addition, Gimberlin and Schwartz both added a pair of assists to finish with four points.

Red Lake Falls, Minn.—Garrett Schimtz tallied a hat trick to help Red Lake Falls skate past Wadena-Deer Creek 7-4 on Saturday.

Dylan Zutz added two goals for the Eagles, who jumped out to a 3-0 lead just eight minutes into the game and knocked out Wolverine starting goalie Cory McManigle.

Wadena, Minn.—Nate Mettenburg netted the game-winning goal as Prairie Centre used a strong third period to streak past Wadena-Deer Creek 4-2 on Friday.

Mettenburg iced the game-winner 3:08 into the final period as the North Stars unleashed 17 shots at netminder Wesley Janson. The Wolverines, who started off strong with 13 shots in the opening period, was held to just two shots in the period.
