The Minnesota State High School League’s Prep Championship Series — the three state championship baseball games — are still scheduled for Wednesday, June 22. The weather forecast indicates only “periods” of rain rather than showers (which by the way are occurring as this is written). The schedule — for now — is for the Class A game to start at noon, followed by the Class AA game at 3 p.m. and the Class AAA game at 6 p.m.

The Minnesota State High School League has postponed the Prep Championship Series — the three state championship baseball games — until Wednesday, June 22. The weather forecast for Tuesday, June 21, the scheduled date for the games at Target Field in Minneapolis, indicates that rain is likely to make it impossible to play all three games.

Verndale dropped both games of the Park Region Conference doubleheader to Bertha-Hewitt by identical 10-0, five-inning scores Tuesday.

The Pirates couldn’t muster a run against some tough Bertha-Hewitt pitching and committed 13 errors in the first game, which led to a rough outing for starter Dustin Motchenbacher.

Verndale managed six hits against Bertha-Hewitt pitcher Dakota Aeling, with Isaac Schmitz going 2-for-4 for the Pirates.

The nightcap wasn’t any better for the Pirates, although they did cut down on their errors by committing two.

Verndale didn’t let the long layoff affected them—instead the defense turned two double plays and Clay Cottrell retired the seventh with three consecutive strikeouts to lift the Pirates to a 5-2 non-conference win over Lake Park-Audubon on Friday.

“After not playing a game in eleven days it was nice to see the boys show up and make the plays behind Clay and get him the run support.” Verndale coach Matt Parker said.

The Pirates notched two runs in the opening frame, only to have the Raiders answer with a pair in the top of the second inning.
