Prep Softball: Pine River-Backus mauls Lady Pirates in six, 14-4

Pine River, Minn.—Verndale could only muster two hits during Friday’s 14-4 non-conference loss to Pine River-Backus in six innings.

The Tigers scored five runs in the second inning behind two bases-loaded walks and a pair of Verndale errors. Morgan Demars had the only base hit during the frame that led to another Pine River-Backus run.

Verndale, Minn.—Sarah Moenkedick ripped three hits and Jackie Swenson drove in four runs as Verndale snapped an eight-game losing streak with Thursday’s five-inning 17-7 victory over Hillcrest Lutheran.

Brittany Christenson highlighted the Comets’ two-run first with an RBI double, but the Lady Pirates erupted for 10 runs in the bottom of the second to establish control of the game.

Verndale, Minn.—Eagle Valley scored four runs in the top of the seventh to cap off a late rally during Friday’s 8-4 non-conference win over Verndale.

The Rebels had rallied from an early 4-2 deficit to tie the game in the fifth inning.

Jordy Schluttner highlighted the Lady Pirates’ three-run, third-inning outburst with a two-run double.

Verndale, Minn.—Pillager took advantage of Verndale’s inability to find the strike zone during Tuesday’s 14-2 and 13-11 Park Region Conference doubleheader sweep of the Lady Pirates.

The Huskies were issued 11 free passes from Verndale starting pitcher Kirstin Korfe, who also unleashed seven wild pitches during a tough outing in the first game.

Sebeka, Minn.—Sebeka used a four-run sixth to hand Verndale an 8-4 loss during Tuesday’s Park Region Conference contest.

The host Lady Trojans jumped up front in the opening frame when Shelby Pulju ripped a double that scored Katie Brockpahler and Jessica Lillquist for the 2-0 lead.
