Wadena Deer Creek Girls' Tennis wrapped up their 2011 season with their team awards banquet Thursday, November 3.

Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Upsala-Swanville cruised past Wadena-Deer Creek in the regular season finale by winning five of the seven matches by straight sets en route to the 7-0 victory Thursday afternoon.

The Lady Wolverines’ Paige Hartman and Sarah Najjar prevented the Thunder from posting a clean sweep. Hartman lost to Nikki Szech 6-7 (1-7), 2-7 at No. 2 singles and Najjar fell 2-6, 6-1, (5-10) during a super tiebreaker at third singles.

Wadena-Deer Creek posted three singles victories, but West Central Area scored a doubles sweep to squeak past the Lady Wolverines 4-3 in Tuesday’s girls tennis action.

The Knights’ Vessa Bumgardner scored the decisive match point at No. 4 singles with her 6-0, 6-4 victory over Abby Wegscheid.

Two of the Lady Wolverines singles victories came courtesy of extra sets or tiebreakers.

Wadena-Deer Creek finished in fourth-place during its annual, four-team Lions Tournament on Saturday.

The Lady Wolverines scored three points in the event that was dominated by Pequot Lakes and Osakis. The Patriots captured the team title with 18 points, while the Silverstreaks finished runner-ups with 16 points. Crosby-Ironton notched five points to claim third place.

The Wadena-Deer Creek girls tennis team dropped a pair of matches in Thursday’s triangular in Staples-Motley. The Lady Wolverines were defeated by the host Cardinals 6-1 in the opener and then fell 5-2 to Crosby-Ironton.
